The Six-Store Lock Disaster of Chip from Naples, Florida
Chip Did Everything Possible To Avoid Calling A Local Locksmith In Naples Florida.
Chip is a proud DIY guy. He fixes his own leaky faucet, he assembles his own patio furniture, and he once changed a lightbulb without calling his brother-in-law. So when his front door lock started sticking in the middle of July, he figured, “How hard can a lock be?” He just wanted to avoid the Naples locksmith service charge.
Famous last words.
It started with a key that wouldn’t turn all the way. Chip decided the lock was just “dirty” and grabbed some WD-40. That made it worse. Now the key wouldn’t turn at all, and Chip was locked out of his own house in 92°F humidity with salt air sticking to everything.
“No problem,” Chip said. “I’ll just replace the whole thing without any locksmith in Naples charging me that service call price.”
He pulled the old lock off and drove to the first hardware store in Naples with the lock in a Ziploc bag like it was evidence at a crime scene. The guy at the counter said, “We don’t carry that exact brand.” Chip bought a similar-looking one anyway. It didn’t fit. But, he was determine not to call a locksmith in Naples Florida so off he went to the next store.
Store two had a lock that fit the hole but the latch was too short. Store three had the right latch but the wrong color. Store four was out of stock. Store five had the right size but it was for a left-hand door and Chip’s door swings right. At this point Chip was starting to sweat more than the lock was. At this point, he had to think if he made a mistake not calling a locksmith in Naples FL, but no he kept going full speed ahead.
By store six, Chip was on a mission. He walked in with three old locks in his bag and said, “I need the one that fits this, that, and that.” The employee looked at him, looked at the locks, and said, “Sir, this is like trying to match socks in the dark, you should call a local Naples locksmith for service.” Chip bought a lock anyway.
Back home, Chip spent the next 3.5 hours on his front porch, drilling, hammering, and muttering things he wouldn’t say in front of his mom. The new lock didn’t line up. The deadbolt wouldn’t throw. The key got stuck halfway. Finally, at 8pm, Chip sat down on his step, wiped his forehead, and realized he had a pile of mismatched parts and a door that was now less secure than before.
Exhausted, sweaty, and officially out of pride, Chip called Zack’s Locksmith Service of Naples Florida, a locally owned locksmith in Naples Florida who has been a locksmith for many years on the westcoast before he moved here.
Zack showed up 20 minutes later with a small toolkit and zero judgment. He took one look at Chip’s door, one look at the bag of wrong parts, and grinned. “You got a coastal-grade lock with a 2 3/8 inch backset. The one you bought is a 2 3/4 inch for interior doors. It’ll never fit right.”
Within 15 minutes, Zack the Naples locksmith pro had installed a proper marine-grade deadbolt that actually worked, rekeyed the back door while he was at it, and made sure everything lined up so it wouldn’t stick in the humidity.
Chip handed him a cold water and said, “I tried to save $80 and ended up wasting half my day and $120 on parts that don’t fit.”
Zack laughed. “Happens all the time in Naples. The salt air eats locks for lunch, and hardware stores don’t stock the right stuff for coastal homes. You should’ve called me first, I would’ve been done before your ice cream melted.”
As Zack drove off, Chip locked his door with the new key, and it turned smoother than it had in years. He stood there for a second, locked and unlocked it three more times just to enjoy it, then went inside and ordered takeout because he was too tired to cook.
The Moral of the Story: The ocean breeze is great for your patio. It’s terrible for your lock. Sometimes saving money means calling the guy who actually knows which part fits before you spend 3.5 hours and a Ziploc bag full of regret finding out the hard way. Next time hire a licensed locksmith in Naples FL who can do the job before you finish your breakfast so you can enjoy the rest of the day without any turmoil.
